Regarding vitamins and minerals, fruits and vegetables are the frontrunners. But who’s in the running for first place? Researchers have found out.

It’s no secret that plenty of vegetables and a good portion of fruit are the keys to a healthy diet. After all, they contain plenty of vitamins and essential substances such as iron, potassium and magnesium – and they taste good, too. Researchers at William Paterson University in New Jersey helped analyze 41 types of fruit and vegetables for their content of essential plant substances and chose a winner: Watercress.

For this purpose, the contained value of potassium, fibre, calcium, iron, riboflavin, niacin, folic acid, and zinc, as well as the value of vitamins A, B6, B12, C, D, E and K about the contained calories were analyzed. According to the study, if you eat 100 calories from watercress – also called watercress – you will cover your daily requirement of each of the above nutrients.

However, one problem somehow got lost in the study: for every 100 grams, the watercress has just 11 calories. So to get 100 calories from watercress, you’d have to eat almost a kilo of the herb, which is sold primarily in mini-packs and served as a topping for soups and salads. Therefore, a colourful mix of different vegetables and fruits, healthy fats, carbohydrates and proteins, ,remains the easiest way to a healthy diet.

These vegetables occupy places one to 15. The first fruit does not reach the ranking until later; strawberries land in 30th place among the healthiest foods.
